If you are unhappy with the shape of your teeth, porcelain veneers can be a really effective way to get the perfect shape and proportions for a natural and beautiful smile.  Porcelain veneers also has the added benefit of being able to change the colour of the teeth as well.

A porcelain veneer is similar to a floor tile.  It is a relatively thin piece of porcelain that is bonded to a stable tooth surface.  Though they are thin and relatively fragile outside of the mouth, like a floor tile, one it’s cemented down to that hard surface it becomes very strong.

The process of veneers is similar to a crown, in that the teeth are prepared, an impression or scan is taken, the veneers are made in a lab, and then glued onto the tooth surfaces.  The big difference with veneers is the planning involved.  Given that the procedure is almost completely aesthetic in nature, if you are not completelyhappy with how it looks once in the mouth then there is not point.  For this reason, photos, impressions, smile design, a wax/digital simulation and even an in-mouth mock-up can all be an important part of the process beyond what it typically required for a crown.

Though veneers look great and can transform your smile, it is important to note that the veneers do require some (albeit minimal) tooth removal.   How that biological cost weighs up against the aesthetic gain is a personal consideration, but it’s important to fully consider the long-term requirements carefully before going ahead.
